Fruit Dumplings

Fruit dumplings prepared for lunch. Peaches, pluots and plutines today. Plums, apricots and cherries are options. Top with cottage cheese, sugar and melted butter. Some add cinnamon. A Czech staple for special occasions in our family. Infinitely delicious. Followed by a great rich dessert: chocolate, rice crisps and cherry no-bake cookies.

Iva Cookies

The Iva cookie. These wonderful cookies were made by both my mother and great grandmother. Both named Iva. My wife carries on the tradition but now gluten free.

Happy Thanksgiving

If you have turkey for Thanksgiving please eat a heritage or wild turkey. The commercial birds have terrible lives and can barely walk let alone fly before they meet their end. And they do not taste like an actual turkey. Remember, real turkeys fly.

What’s In Your Breakfast?

I begin every morning with a bit of rolled oats oatmeal and a few condiments. The goodies I add are pictured.

Pistachios, raw cashews, raw walnuts, raw almonds, raw sunflower seeds, pepitas, ginger, cinnamon, currents, rice “milk” and chia seeds.

I have replaced the agave sweetener with honey for its prebiotic properties and added steel cut oats for more fiber and chewiness. I use rolled oats because I can't wait the extra few minutes it takes to cook the steel cut oats.

Free Taco Bell Taco?

If Taco Bell wants to give “every” USer in USerland a taco for each World Series stolen base what kind of taco will they give vegetarians and vegans? Since I do not visit fast food franchises will they send my taco to my home? Will it be warm? Since I do not eat such crap can I ask that my free taco be sent to a kitchen that feeds those in need? Come on Taco Bell, make an offer that will benefit someone other than the overfed populous of our overweight country. And… the offer lasts “until supplies last”. Supplies of tacos? Supplies of citizens? If you say “every” that means ALL. Taco Bell sounds like a typical politician. They say one thing but mean something entirely different. Is that a misdirection or a falsehood? I am not voting for Taco Bell.

Suzy’s Third Anniversary

It was three years ago today that my wife and I were adopted by a nine year old Sheltie mix named Suzy. (Suzy barks that she is a “Meltie”.) Soon after the death of her previous guardian, she was fostered with a family that had both large and small dogs, several cats, a few sheep and small grandchildren. Suzy had it made. Along with all the interaction with other animals and humans she had about all she could eat. After all the other dogs were fed and had their fill, Suzy, ever so helpful, would make sure the bowls were clean. She did not like to go on walks. Her only real exercise was running about in a large yard. She was a bit plump when we first saw her.

After three years, she still is a foodie (but a bit trimmer) and receives her three small meals a day. We are now trained to provide those meals at very specific times of the day, treats in a timely manner and go on walks moseys by the clock. As we all know, every plant, every blade of grass and each patch of asphalt holds pee mail from our companion’s friends and must be minutely interpreted before proceeding. Thus the moseys.

Every dog guardian is blessed with the unbridled and unconditional love of their canine companion(s), be they purebred, “Melties”, rescues or born to the manor. Every day we are thankful for Suzy, her love, her antics and her strict eating, mosey and treat timetable to which we have become accustomed. But in the background there is always the joy that we are able to give Suzy a second chance at living out her life in a loving home and be able to enjoy “running like the winds”, as she would bark.

Bad news. EPA says yes to E-15 ethanol blends. Just say no. Ethanol is bad for you.

Ethanol and corn are killing our rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. We have got to end this idiotic reliance on corn and find a more environmentally sound solution for both a food and fuel source.

How does Chili’s know we’re going to be eating ribs four hours before we arrive?
